Double C Guides and Outfitters

We are a small yet personal Utah hunting guide operating in several of the top producing hunting units in the state. We grew up hunting these mountains and over the past 25 years have come to know them well. We have been guiding friends and family for over 15 years and began guiding professionally in 2002. In that time, we have successfully guided our hunters to deer, elk, moose, mountain goat and pronghorn.

We use horses where necessary to access the more remote locations of our hunting areas, and in some cases, camp it's self. Our camps include spacious and comfortable wall tents each with a wood burning stove used for heating. We also have a cook tent where we prepare meals that are beyond the basic can of stew. We pride ourselves on feeding our hunters well. Many of our meals are prepared in dutch ovens and there is typically more than you can eat.

We cover all aspects of the hunt once we have picked you up or after you have arrived in camp if you choose to get there yourself. This includes meals, lodging, transportation, and game care. All you need to worry about is your personal equipment and gear. This includes your hunting license and permit. However, we will help you acquire them if you need. Most permits require that you apply in the annual drawing in January or February. If you want help filling out your application, please don't hesitate to Contact Us. We provide this service for free though we may require a deposit that is 100% refundable if you do not draw. Check out our Rates/Licenses page for more details.

Rates are based on a 1 hunter/1 guide ratio. Contact us for 2 hunter / 1 guide discount. A non-hunting companion can be included on any hunt for $500. Days listed may include 1/2 day travel on both ends of a hunt.

Utah Hunting Trips

Whether you have drawn a coveted limited entry elk permit, a once in a lifetime mountain goat tag, or if you are just looking for some help on a general season deer or elk hunt, we have a hunt for you. We guide some of the top limited entry elk and deer areas in the state of Utah. We are also licensed to guide most of the mountain goat units, several of the moose units and a couple areas for pronghorn.
We offer fully guided hunts, hosted hunts and a great youth deer hunt as well. For those that want to skip the annual drawing, we have a few landowner deer tags and there is always the conservation tag options. The conservation tags can be expensive, but they are a great way to hunt when you want without having to wait for the drawing. Contact us if you would like to go this route and we can discuss your options. Check out the links below for more information on what we have to offer and then contact us to get your hunt scheduled.

Elk Hunts & Elk Hunting

We hunt trophy quality elk throughout the state of Utah. We guide several of the top producing limited entry units, several great opportunity units as well as several general season areas. All of these areas offer archery hunts, rifle hunts and muzzleloader hunts.
Our limited entry areas can be difficult to draw, but are well worth the time and effort. True trophy quality bulls are taken every year from most of these areas. The "opportunity units" generally produce representative bulls and are usually much easier to draw. These are a good choice if you just want to hunt elk with a reasonable chance at taking a 6x6 bull. We also offer hunts on one of Utah's any bull general season units as well as several spike only areas. These are guaranteed permits and can be purchased over the counter after the drawing results are posted.
We offer 1x1 fully guided hunts that include the guide, lodging, hunt transportation, meals and trophy care. Depending on the unit hunted, camp may be along side a road or may require a horse ride of 3 to 10 miles.

Book Cliffs, Little Creek (Roadless)

The Book Cliffs, Little Creek (Roadless) unit is one of our favorite elk areas. The roadless book cliffs are not huge in size, but is far bigger than can be hunted in a single season. As the name implies, this is an area that is accessible by foot traffic or horseback only. A 10 mile horse ride to camp puts all the ATV's, trucks, and crowds behind. The "roadless area" frequently produces bulls in the 340-350 range with a reasonable chance at a 360 . This is a remote and rugged hunt so hunters need to be in shape. This area also offers an awesome general season archery spike hunt.

Book Cliffs, Bitter Creek-South

The Bitter Creek portion of the Book Cliffs is a huge area that holds a very healthy population of elk. Access throughout the unit is very good with many oil and gas mining roads. Bulls scoring 320-340 are reasonable expectations with a moderate possibility of a bull exceeding 350. There are canyons where the elk will go to escape hunting pressure that are quite steep and very deep. There is a lot of oak brush with some pines and aspens mixed in. Though access is very good, this is a very remote unit. Going to town will burn a full day of hunting time.

Central Mountains, Manti

The Manti unit holds more elk than any area of the state. There is good access to most areas of the unit though we prefer to hunt the more inaccessible parts. This is one unit that we can offer a roadside camp or a horse back camp. Expect steep canyons with dark timber. There are also wide open areas where glassing long distances is possible. 320 to 340 class bulls are to be expected with some exceeding 350.

Oquirrh-Stansbury

The Oquirrh Stansbury unit is best hunted out of a roadside camp (or even a hotel if you prefer) with daily horse rides into the upper canyons and basins. There is a lot of private land on this unit that hunters need to be able to avoid. Steep canyons filled with oak brush, pines, aspens and mahogany are to be expected. Bulls scoring in the 300 to 330 range can be expected with a moderate chance of a 340 .

Plateau, Boulder/Kiaparowits

The Plateau Boulder unit has been one of the top trophy producing units for many years. Though the unit is huge, there is not an extremely large population of elk. Most bulls will score in the 330 to 360 range with a fair chance of a 370 . This unit has produced several 400 class bulls in recent years. Thick stands of timber are the norm and glassing can be difficult. Access to most areas of the unit is pretty good with one main paved road going over the top. A roadside camp is possible, though we prefer to hunt an area that is a short 3 mile horse ride into camp.

Uintahs, South Slope

The South Slope of the Uintas is a general season over the counter any bull unit. Access is extremely limited and requires horses or a backpack type camp. Our camp is an easy 3-5 mile horse ride and is set right on the edge of the wilderness boundary near 10,000 feet. Though bulls in excess of 300 are possible, we encourage hunters to take any legal bull spotted. Dark timber with open parks are what you will be hunting. Some steep canyons are in the area, but the elk typically reside in the vast wild forest.

Wasatch Mountains

The Wasatch Mountains is one of the most popular elk units Utah has to offer. A large population of elk with good trophy potential provide for a great hunting experience. There is easy access throughout most of the unit though this can also cause some problems. Trucks and ATV's navigate this unit at will causing the elk to find those few secluded areas where they can hide. To escape as much of this as we can, our camp is set near a trailhead into a small roadless area. We take short horse rides or day hikes into this area. 310 to 330 class bulls are a reasonable expectation with bigger being a real possibility. Several 360 to 400 class bulls have been take from this unit.

Deer Hunts & Deer Hunting

Our deer hunting is second to none. We offer hunts on some of Utah's top limited entry units as well as some general season areas. Most of these hunts are based out of roadside camps, but our general season hunts are usually out of a horseback camp. This puts us away from most of the crowds and gives us a head start each day.
On our general season area, Oquirrh-Stansbury" we offer a youth hunt that will give the young hunter an exceptional opportunity to harvest a buck. With a full paying adult hunter, a youth hunter (12-17) hunts for only $500.

Book Cliffs

The Book Cliffs holds the potential for a giant mule deer. This is an extremely remote unit that holds a great herd of mature bucks. Our hunters will usually get the opportunity to look over dozens of 4x4's while they search for that one special buck. Deep canyons filled with thick oak brush provide excellent mule deer habitat. Our camp is a roadside camp placed within easy distance of prime deer hunting areas. For the archery hunter, there is a portion of this unit (Book Cliffs Roadless area) were we offer a horseback camp 10 miles from the roads and crowds. We seldom see deer hunters in this area of the unit.

Fillmore, Oak Creek

The Fillmore, Oak Creek is a very rough rugged unit. There is potential for a great buck and some true giants have been taken from this area. Steep canyons choked with oak brush and juniper are hunted on the lower portions of the unit while aspen and pines with open hillsides are up higher. This is a roadside camp type hunt or for those that are a bit more adventurous, a backpack type hunt is a great option. Horses are not used or even possible in many areas.

Henry Mountains

As most hunters know, the Henry Mountains is one of the top mule deer units in the country. A buck scoring in excess of 190 is a reasonable expectation going into this hunt. This country is very steep and will require some heavy hiking to get into the better areas. Good bucks can be found from the roads, but the best bucks usually require much more effort. Stands of pines with huge open hillsides are what we will be hunting.

Oquirrh-Stansbury

This is our general season area. A 3 mile horse ride puts you into a secluded campsite and prime mule deer habitat. We hunt high mountain basins far above the roads that can be seen down below. Good bucks in the 20-24" class are what we are after with the chance at finding something special. We offer a youth hunt out of this camp designed to give the young hunter (12-17) the best possible opportunity to take a buck. A youth hunter hunts for $500 when accompanied by a full price adult hunter. Horses get us to camp, but hunting will be done on foot each day. This hunt does require that the hunter be in shape as the mountains and basins are rather steep.

Paunsaugunt

The famed Paunsaugunt is considered by most to be a premium deer unit. Record quality bucks are taken each year from this area. The upper portion of the unit is thick stands of pine and aspens while lower areas are oak brush, junipers and mahogany. A network of forest roads exists throughout the unit and most areas can be easily accessed from these roads. We will hunt out of a roadside camp and the hunting areas accessed by truck and by foot.

West Desert, Vernon

When hunting the West Desert, Vernon unit, hunters will likely look at dozens of deer per day. Good bucks are available with a few exceptional bucks being taken each year. This unit is comprised of a few tall mountains with wide open hillsides and sage brush flats. Canyons filled with oak brush and junipers provide excellent cover. Most areas can be accessed by a network of roads and trails. Hunting will be conducted by trucks and on foot.

Mountain Goat Hunts

Our Mountain Goat hunts are conducted on all of the Wasatch Mountains sub-units as well as the High Uintas West and Central units. All Mountain goat hunts are extremely strenuous and will require some steep mountain hiking. To insure the best possibility of success, hunters are encouraged to get into the best shape possible before coming to camp.
Utah has an outstanding population of mountain goats. You will likely be able to look over numerous animals while looking for that one special trophy. We try to run our goat hunts from mid September to the first week of October. After the first part of October, there becomes an increasing risk of heavy snow - especially in the Uintas units. Once this snow flies, it may be impossible to reach the high country where these goats reside.

Wasatch Mountains Lone Peak

There are some great goats on the Lone Peak unit. If they wish to hunt the Wasatch, this is the hunt all non-residents must apply for. If drawn, the non-resident is allowed to hunt all 4 of the Wasatch Mountains sub units. A hunt on this unit could be shared with many hikers and sight seers as most of the access points are through the Cottonwood Canyons east of Salt Lake City. These canyons are very popular with the non-hunting population. Horses are not allowed as these canyons are water shed for the Salt Lake Valley. All hunting will be done on foot.

Wasatch Mountains Box Elder Peak

Box Elder Peak has historically produced some trophy quality goats. This is a very rugged unit that receives far less attention from the non-hunting populace. There are several main basins that the goats reside in and some serious hiking may be involved. Horses will be used to access camp.

Wasatch Mountains Timpanogos

Mount Timpanogos is true mountain goat country. The trail that access the goat habitat is very popular with hikers and a hunter will likely see many non hunters. The trail is not terribly rough, but it is long. A backpack hunt will require strong legs and a lot of determination. We use horses to access the lower basins (6 mile ride) and then hike up to the goats from camp.

Wasatch Mountains Provo Peak

Provo Peak is the lowest of the 4 Wasatch Mountains goat units, but in places it is the roughest. It is also the unit that receives the fewest recreational hikers. Camp will be accessed by horseback and hunting will be day hikes out from there.

High Uintah West & High Uintah Central

All of the North Slope South Slope High Uintas goat units are extremely remote. Many of the goats are 10 miles or more from the closest road. These units also contain some of the highest mountain peaks within the state of Utah. Most of these hunts will be at elevations above 10,000 feet and can extend up to and over 13,000. These units are vast and contain incredible mountain goat habitat. However, not all habitat is frequented by these goats. Without knowing where the goats are, a hunter could spend days looking at great habitat that is devoid of goats. These units are very steep and it is very easy to shoot a goat in an unrecoverable area. A plan for recovery needs to be thought out before any shot is taken.

Moose and Pronghorn Hunts

Moose

All our moose hunting is conducted on the Wasatch Mountains and the North Slope Summit units. These are giant areas, but the moose are not found everywhere throughout them. Our moose hunting camp is set near to one of the highest moose concentrations on the Wasatch unit and we have seen some excellent bulls in the area. We also hunt multiple drainages on the North Slope that have high concentrations of moose with exceptional trophy potential.
Where ever possible, we use horses to access the more remote areas on the mountain and certainly to pack an animal out once it hits the ground. Moose are a giant animal and will turn into multiple heavy pack trips if all that is available is a back pack. We have a well trained herd of pack horses that do all of the packing.

Pronghorn

Our Pronghorn hunts take place on either the Plateau unit or the Book Cliffs Cisco unit. Both of these units have produced some great pronghorn bucks over the years with the Cisco unit holding better trophy potential.
Archery hunting is done by placing a blind beside a waterhole and waiting for the bucks to come to water. Shots are typically within 30 yards. On our rifle hunts, we like to hunt by finding the highest point possible and glassing until we find the animal we want to take. We then stalk in as close as possible before taking the shot.

Licensing

Most licenses in Utah are awarded through the annual limited entry drawing. The application process can be very confusing for many hunters but we will do all we can to make that application process easier. We know the drawing odds and trophy potential for each area we guide and we will help you select the hunt that best fits your objectives and goals.
There are also some general season hunting opportunities available for both deer and elk. Most deer permits are awarded through the annual drawing, however we have access to a 10,000 acre private ranch that offers a number of landowner deer tags. The season dates on this ranch are very flexible. We can start as early as mid September and go as late as early November. Contact us early to acquire one of these permits. In the drawing, the general season licenses are usually easier to draw than the limited entry hunts. General season elk permits can be purchased over the counter or on-line and are awarded on a first come - first serve basis.

Conservation Licenses

Utah offers conservation licenses for every species in the state and on most hunting units. These permits are available through various conservation organizations. Contact us if you are interested in acquiring one of these permits. We will attend the auction and purchase the tag on your behalf.

Rates/Days

Rates are based on a 1 hunter/1 guide ratio. Contact us for 2 hunter / 1 guide discount. A non-hunting companion can be included on any hunt for $500. Days listed may include 1/2 day travel on both ends of a hunt.

State Sales Tax

Per Utah state law, each hunt will be assessed a sales and use tax of approximately 6%.
