At Lazy J Bar O Outfitters, we offer high quality horseback hunting expeditions in Montana and Alaska. Our hunts are all fair-chase, wilderness adventures.
In Montana, we provide highly successful wilderness hunts for elk, deer, bighorn sheep, black bear and mountain lion. In Alaska, we are the premier horseback outfitter, specializing in remote hunting for Alaska-Yukon moose, dall sheep, grizzly and caribou.
Outfitter Mike Colpo has been guiding professionally for more than 30 years in Montana and more than 25 years in Alaska. We own our own stock, and being a breeder gives us the benefit of having the best horses and mules in the business. We have horses to suit riders of any ability level. The combination of experience, a great staff and a dedicated focus on customer service, allows us to provide a memorable experience for each of our guests.

We are fortunate to hunt expansive wilderness areas that offer unparalleled opportunities for solitude and adventure. In addition to archery and rifle season hunts, Montana offers a unique opportunity to hunt elk with a rifle during the rut in September. But this is only available in select - and extremely remote - wilderness areas.
We primarily hunt the steep and rugged wilderness of southwest Montana. This area flies under the radar, but we’re perfectly content with that underrated status. This area is home to some of the best elk hunting in Montana. In fact, we'll go further. We think it's some of the best general-unit elk hunting available anywhere! With an elk population that has exploded and continues to grow each year, this area has an extremely high bull-to-cow ratio. If you have a bull elk hunt on your list, this is an area you must explore!
These hunts may be conducted from a lodge or upper wilderness camp and can be customized based on the individual needs of each client or group. We use horse and mule power to access remote areas and the best hunting opportunities. We use our own stock and being a breeder gives us a clear advantage. We can provide horses for riders of any ability level.

With a growing elk population and a very high concentration of bulls, this may be the best general-unit elk hunting anywhere in the Rockies today. With little recognition and subsequently low hunting pressure, it just keeps getting better each year.
The area is comprised of steep, rugged backcountry wilderness near our headquarters in Big Timber, Montana. The bull-to-cow ratio is very high and this area consistently produces big numbers of trophy-quality bulls. This is real backcountry elk hunting at its absolute best.

Lodge hunts during the general rifle season are conducted out of nice lodge with great food and hospitality. We will hunt National Forest lands by pickup and horseback. These are 6-day hunts. Hunters should arrive the previous day by late morning to check rifles, etc.
Our wilderness camp hunts during the general rifle season are 8-day trips. This includes a pack-in day, a pack-out day, and six total days of hunting. Our wilderness camps are extremely limited, with a maximum of two to three hunters per hunt.

Mike and Jojo Colpo are your outfitters and hosts. Mike has been guiding in Alaska for 25 years and has guided professionally for more than 30 years in Montana, several other western states and abroad. Jojo is an accomplished horse hand and keeps things organized in the office. By combining their strengths and the talents their guides, each client is provided a highly memorable experience.
Mike spent four years with the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was a competitive and winning small bore shooter, high power shooter, long range shooter and running target shooter. He was also a sniper instructor during his time at Ft. Benning.
